Lemoncella Cocktail by Rene Natan is a slow paced crime stand alone novel . The story is about Patrick, a good Samaritan trying to help save Amelia and her family. Amelia witnesses a gun trafficking and now bad guys want to eliminate her.
Patrick Carter, a troubled young man, while walking back home hears a cry for help by the river side. He rushes to save the drowning girl (Samantha) and on being the hero, his world turns upside down .
The author made the story very long and slow. The first few chapters held my interest after which I lost it. I understand the author was trying to make the story feel real but I am sure even in real life the “cops” would act much faster. The bad guys were destroying Samantha’s family left and right. There were instances in the book where I felt the author just wanted to drag the story for example giving the villain time to scout Samantha’s house in-spite of several cameras around the house and this being discovered only a day later by the police. I am assuming the author wanted to show the villains were equally brilliant but on doing so she made the cops look dim witted.
The romance between Patrick and Emy ( an investigator) was very awkward. It felt like they were forced to romance each other. I liked Amelia and Samantha’s grandmother. She was one strong lady who took care of her grandchildren more than their parents. She held together after tragedy hit her.Justin was a brilliant kid but in some places he sounded much older than a 5 year old.
On reading the blurb I expected a much more fast paced thriller where as this novel was lethargic. Places where the scenes were intense , Nathan made it sound like yet another day. On the positive note the book had no loose ends and all the way through the book the characters were portrayed strong and resilient.
The story would have been more interesting with proper scenes and dialogues to create suspense. Even though the characters were likable , their behavior were at times unrealistic. I believe “take life as it comes and move forward”Ā is the message Natan wanted to pass on however it could have been portrayed better in the book. I felt all the characters were too quick to move on after tragic incidents. One last thing before I conclude, if you are trying to figure out the relationship between the title and the story, you are sure to be disappointed. The reason for the title is revealed at the very end and it is unexpected. Finally, if you like a fast paced thriller, then this book is definitely not for you.
